The Qalamdan - pen box in farsi - is a recognized symbol of Persian cultural heritage, representing more than a container; it embodies deep knowledge, artistry, and intellectual tradition. Its intricate designs, celebrated in museums worldwide, highlight the enduring legacy of Persian craftsmanship.

In today's context, the Qalamdan bridges the past with modern narratives, addressing themes of resilience in the face of oppression. The 'Bound Qalamdan,' transforms this traditional item, now modified and constrained, to reflect the struggle for free expression under authoritarian controls.

The use of marble emphasizes the enduring and aesthetic qualities of Iranian culture, which remains resilient and refined in the face of difficulties. Its contrasting shades of bright white onyx and deep red interiors convey a narrative of beauty intertwined with sacrifice. As this Qalamdan reaches the U.S., it transcends its role as a cultural artifact to become a reminder of the importance of protecting our freedoms, illustrating the fragile balance between oppression and liberty.

The Qalamdan, crafted with precision by Solid Nature, debuted at NeoCon 2024 at Luminaire Chicago. This showcase was part of the "Souvenirs of a Forgotten Past" exhibition, organized in collaboration with Secrets of the Universe. The exhibition delves into the idea of souvenirs as artifacts that connect memory with the present moment, featuring works by designers and artists who created stone souvenirs that tell their personal cultural stories. This initiative fosters conversations about identity, belonging, and the experiences of diasporas, highlighting the deep human connection to place.

The qalamdan came to life with a partnership with Atharva Raut, a skilled practitioner of Houdini 3D modeling software, the studio successfully coded complex forms for CNC machining. Atharva's technical expertise was integral in translating intricate designs into digital simulations, enriching our creative process with precision and innovation.
